The Perfect Combination: Drinking and Writing
The crew at Ludwig Roars likes to write. They like to drink beer. And they’re really fond of doing both at the same time. So their hearts leapt when they stumbled upon the Chicago-based Drinking & Writing Brewery.
The Brewery’s latest program, which takes place at the Hopleaf Bar today and the next two Saturdays at 4 pm, is To Cure a Hangover. “Neo-futurists” Sean Benjamin and Steve Mosqueda will deliver a “lecture-cum-performance” about the nasty effects of overdoing it. They’ll be reading self-loathing prose from John Cheever and Charles Bukowski–whom they describe as “two monumental drinker-writers at opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum”–and intertwining it with tales of their own experiments in thwarting that hung-over “poor sense of well-being.”
In March, the Brewery will offer its first-ever course Drinking & Writing course, again hosted by Benjamin and Mosqueda. This five-week course includes discussion of famous drinking writers, special guest speakers, and–of course–drinking and writing. The “final exam” will consist of short “Drinking & Writing” performances, written and performed by students. The faculty strongly encourages drinking in class.
