Spend the Night at the Doghouse

Scotland-based BrewDog is not only building a brewery in Columbus, Ohio, but is also planning to add a 50-room beer-themed hotel called “The Doghouse” next door. BrewDog launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com, with a fund-raising goal of $75,000.

Amenities at the DogHouse will include a tap in every room featuring Punk IPA, the brand’s flagship beer; a beer-stocked mini-bar in every shower; access to limited-edition beers from the brewery next door; a spa that uses beer in its products and treatments; and craft-beer pairings during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The luxury suite includes a hot tub filled with IPA (not recommended for drinking at spa temperatures).

The Doghouse’s projected opening date is September 2018. If you make a $150 investment, you’ll be guaranteed a reservation when it opens.

On this day in 1520, Ferdinand Magellan discovered a navigable sea route separating South America and Tierra del Fuego. The treacherous body of water is now known as the Strait of Magellan.

It took him 16 tries, but reddit user “boomboomsaloon” finally succeeded in buying beer using a Blockbuster Video membership card as proof of age.

“It’s like a death in the family”, said Revolution Brewing Founder Josh Deth after he recalled more than 10,000 barrels of beer that didn’t meet his brewery’s quality standards.

Kirin Brewing Company, Japan’s second-largest brewery, will buy a 25-percent stake in Brooklyn Brewing Company. Kirin will introduce Brooklyn’s beers in Japan and distribute them in Brazil.

Food blogger Kyle Marcoux aka The Vulgar Chef found a new way to pair beer and pizza. He made a koozie by rolling a square pizza base with pepperoni and mozzarella around a beer can.

Engineers at University of Colorado have developed a process to make lithium-ion battery electrodes from the sugar-rich wastewater created in the beer-making process.

Finally, beer writer Josh Bernstein says these six trends will be the talk of 2017: Marzen beers in the fall, the revival of Kolsch beers, juice-like IPAs, milk stouts, coffee beers, and fruited sour beers.

We begin in Israel, where Itsik Levy named his brewery “Isis” after an Egyptian goddess. Now that the Islamic State is using that name, Levy said—tongue in cheek—that he’s considering “a massive lawsuit” against it.

D’oh! Australian regulators ordered Woolworth’s to stop selling Duff beer because the brand’s association with The Simpsons made it too appealing to would-be underage drinkers.

Scientists say that the fastest way to chill beer is to pour plenty of salt into a bucket of water, then add ice, and then drop in the beer. It’ll be cold in 20 minutes or less.

For Ohio to get Stone Brewing Company’s second brewery, lawmakers will have to raise the ABV cap. Some of Stone’s ales exceed the current 12-percent cap and thus can’t be brewed in Ohio.

Britain’s Prince Harry celebrated his 30th birthday by downing a beer at the Invictus Games. He has good reason to celebrate: now that he’s 30, he inherits $17.4 million from his mother, the late Princess Diana.

The Beer Geeks are returning to this year’s Great American Beer Festival. They’re a corps of 3,000 volunteers who are trained by the Brewers Association to tell festival-goers more about the beers they’re sampling.

Finally, Beverage Grades, a Denver company that analyzes the content of beer and wine, offers a “Copy Cat” app which tells where you can find beer with similar tastes to those you like.

On this day in 1843, one thousand pioneers set out from Missouri on the first major wagon train on the Oregon Trail. It would be nearly 140 more years until microbrew pioneers established themselves in Oregon, but they’re certainly made up for lost time.

We begin in Cleveland, where Johnny Manziel celebrated being drafted #1 draft by the Browns by treating bar patrons to a shot and a beer. The way the Browns have been playing, fans need a few to deaden the pain.

Do you know what LPT1 is? It stands for “lipid transfer protein.” Karl Siebert, a professor of food science in New York State, says it’s the secret to optimal foam in the head of a freshly-poured beer.

Another sign of American craft beer’s popularity overseas: San Diego’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company may invest £1.7 million to develop a brewpub in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Utah is known for teetotaling residents and weird liquor laws, but the state is home to 20 breweries. Best-known is Uinta Brewing Company, which ranks in the country’s top 50.

Esquire magazine’s Aaron Goldfarb cites 13 reasons why bars in movies are totally unrealistic. Reason #12: a customer can ask for “a beer” without naming a brand.

Will Hawkes set out from London on a day trip to Brussels. Stops included Cantillon and several of the city’s famous beer bars, where his group reacquainted itself with the Belgian classics.

Finally, a restaurateur plans to build a Hofbrauhaus beer hall in downtown Buffalo. Meanwhile, another Hofbrauhaus is under construction in Columbus, Ohio.

On this day in 1842, a French priest, Father Edward Frederick Sorin, established the University of Notre Dame du Lac near present-day South Bend, Indiana. Why there? According to legend, Father Sorin said, “We’ll just stay here till the weather gets better.” That legend was made up by alums like Maryanne and Paul, both of whom endured four harsh winters under the Golden Dome.

If you can’t stand bitter beer, blame your parents. Professor Paulo Gasparini of the University of Trieste explains that ability to sense bitterness is genetic.

Infinium, the first new beer style created under the Reinheitsgebot in more than a century, will be released early next month. It’s a collaboration between the Boston Beer Company and Weihenstephan.

Michigan-based Corner Brewery has a Mercedes-Benz fire truck that will someday dispense its beer at festivals.

Columbus, Ohio, is the home of a Budweiser brewery. WBNS-TV was recently invited into the brewery which, unfortunately, doesn’t offer public tours.
